It was finally time! From March 3rd till March 13th, they held the annual motor show in Geneva with all the sexiest cars you can imagine! It needed to be done, so I rushed to Switzerland to be part of this exhibition and drool all over the new models. You are probably asking, “But cars cause smog in cities and global warming. Why would you go see something that will basically cause the end of humanity?” Ok, that was a bit extreme, but of course I had to go see the new Tesla Model X and the hydrogen and hybrid cars. The age of innovative cars is upon us! And of course, Pagani, Lotus and Aston Martin are simply awesome. We at IBARE 14 sure love us some sexy cars that run on green fuel.
I am sure we have all dreamed of having a private jet, an armored car or a teleportation device. It may seem more like a dream than reality to us students at the moment. However, those things are actually more within reach than you think! Except for the teleportation device (I am still waiting for you, NASA). Therefore, I will pull you into the world of armored cars, to make it become less of a fantasy and turn it more into a tangible, close-to-home reality. No, this is not an article about how to become rich very quickly; otherwise I wouldn’t be a student. You guessed it: it’s another interview!
As it should be for us renewable energy students, we went with Mr. Roland Schnell to the Grüne Woche, or International Green Week, in January this year. We just had to go try all the different free food samples from different countries. Wait, I mean we wanted to go see the bioenergy section and wood pellet heaters. But all jokes aside, the bioenergy section was very interesting. We managed to get so much information that we could write a whole essay worth 20 pages, which turned out to be our class project in the end. Either way, we learned so many new things we didn’t even know were possible that we went home a little less dumb.
New year has finally arrived and many of us have probably set new goals for 2016, whether it be finishing that book you started ages ago or finally signing up for that theater class. Mine was to finally finish the blog post of my journey to Thailand.
As a Renewable Energies student at SRH, it is normal to wonder how the energy generation and distribution works in another country. When I was in Thailand, I saw that electric cables were still above ground unlike in Germany. However, being a total nerd, I had to find out more about where those cables came from and what the original energy source was. Thanks to NT from NCC (National Control Center – see my previous blog entry), I was able to understand the general idea of the system a little more.
It is time once again to let go of our holidays and get back into university life. Some are excited, some not and some will miss it. Some of us have graduated and will start a new chapter in life. Looking for a job, go travel or continue to study somewhere else. I have just started my second year at SRH and am curious as to how life may be after university and what I could do before the time comes.
One of the first things you want to do in Thailand, once you step out of the airport, is going to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and doing an interview. At least I did. After a week of beach time and good food that is.
Previously on SRHomies, I mentioned that some members from the Renewable Energies class of 2014 (IBARE 14) are planning on designing a Solar Street Lamp for rural areas. If you haven’t read the previous blog entry yet, do it. It is funny and insightful.
In June, it was time for the annual solar industry exhibition. Many of us from the Renewable Energies class of 2014 were really excited to go there and see the new technological progress it had to offer. We took the 8 hour long bus ride because our wallets did not allow flight tickets, but it did not stop us from going there anyway. Once in Munich, we were stunned by the large number of companies at the exhibition. There were over a thousand exhibitors waiting to show off their solar panels or battery storage systems. Heliatek, Tesla Motors, SMA, Pheasun, Qcells, REC, and the list continues. To cover a lot of ground, we decided to all split up, walk around, talk to different people, ask questions, gather information and meet up by bumping into each other.
