Geneva International Motor Show 2016

Car Salon 1 (2)

It was finally time! From March 3rd till March 13th, they held the annual motor show in Geneva with all the sexiest cars you can imagine! It needed to be done, so I rushed to Switzerland to be part of this exhibition and drool all over the new models. You are probably asking, “But cars cause smog in cities and global warming. Why would you go see something that will basically cause the end of humanity?” Ok, that was a bit extreme, but of course I had to go see the new Tesla Model X and the hydrogen and hybrid cars. The age of innovative cars is upon us! And of course, Pagani, Lotus and Aston Martin are simply awesome. We at IBARE 14 sure love us some sexy cars that run on green fuel.

The exhibition hall in Geneva was packed! It was a bit badly organized, as all the popular luxury cars were put into one corner, causing a major traffic jam in the hall. But it was worth it nonetheless. Here are some cars they had:

The Tesla Model X

Tesla Model X

I am a huge fan of Tesla and their achievements thanks to their CEO Tony Stark, I mean Elon Musk. The car runs only on electricity and has an acceleration speed from 0-100 km/h of 4 seconds. This is almost comparable to a Ferrari! The car has a top speed of 250 km/h. The beauty has its batteries underneath the car that last a distance of 450 km and falcon doors that open upwards. Also it doesn’t need a gearbox. Why? It’s all automatic with an autopilot system too. The price of a Model X is about $81,200 to $116,700 (about €73,000 to €105,000), depending on the battery capacity that you order. Still way too much for the average student, but one can still dream.

Toyota Mirai

Toyota Mirai

Ok, I know Toyota has been working on hybrids for a while now, but this one topped them all. The Toyota Mirai is almost running 100% on hydrogen. The start of the engine and beginning acceleration is done by the 1.6 kW rechargeable battery. Then later the hydrogen engine takes over, using the pressurized hydrogen, mixing it with oxygen (available from the surroundings) and then creating electricity and water as a by-product. We at IBARE 14 did a little course on this with Mr. Hartmann last semester, so we know how it works. The detailed workings of a hydrogen engine can be found under this link if you want to know more:

The whole engine can go from 0-100 km/h in 10 seconds. It has a range of 502 km and a horse power of 152. The price of a Mirai starts at €60,000. Not too bad, but the only issue with such a car is that there aren’t any commercialized hydrogen tank stations yet. There is one in Hamburg and two private stations in Switzerland. So a message to all politicians out there, let’s get these stations up and running!

Porsche Panamera Se-Hybrid

Porsche Panamera

Yes, you read it correctly! They have a hybrid car now! It still runs on petrol but part of that runs on a rechargeable battery. This sexy mama has a total horse power of 416, where the battery has 95 hp and the main motor has 333 hp. It means that the acceleration time from 0-100 km/h is 5.5 seconds. The engine uses 3.1 L petrol and 16.2 kWh per 100 km, which in turn gives a CO2 emission of only 71 g/km. For comparison, the Porsche 911 R uses 13.3 L/ 100 km and has a CO2 emission of 308 g/km. The Hybrid has a top speed of 270 km/h. So now you can be environmentally friendlier and drive a hot sports car at the same time! The price of the Panamera Se- Hybrid starts at €104,340. Yep, we students can totally be green and drive fast cars.

Toyota Kikai

I am sure we have all seen some odd things in our life, like goats on the internet. But this one was rather terrifying and interesting at the same time. The Toyota Kikai is definitely the odd yet artistic side of Toyota. The little terminator isn’t going to hit the road any time soon, if ever. It is simply there for the company to express the designers’ combination of old school and metal styles. One of the Toyota representatives at the Car Salon said, “It’s there to grasp the sophisticated beauty of the mechanical characteristics of cars.”

Although the next models aren’t green like the Tesla or Mirai, they are still hot and mouthwatering cars.

Koenigsegg Agera RS

This Swedish hotness set the place on fire! This babe has 1160 hp with a top speed of 439 km/h and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4 seconds! It’s a super car with sizzling design, top speed, side-upwards opening doors, marvelous interior and a CO2 emission of only 300 g/km. (Notice my sarcasm on the car being eco-friendly. It’s still a cool car though). The Agera RS has a price tag starting at $2 million (about €1.8 million) with only 25 models ever built. So if you want this blond beauty, you better act fast.

Lotus Exige Sports 350

Lotus Exige Sports 350

The British company Lotus Cars really managed to provide sports cars for more affordable prices. The Exige Sports 350 has a top speed of about 270 km/h and an acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds! It has a 345 hp engine, and get this, it weighs only 1.125 tons. It would be like driving 270 km/h on the German Autobahn in a smart car. Now prepare yourself, this gorgeous baby’s price starts at £55,900 (about €71, 200), so you better start saving up.
